I do follow the same procedure normally when I want to modify source and compile it, 
but, my requirement is applying a patch to the existing source package without extracting it again.

Hope my requirement is clear and meaningful.

Maybe this is what you are looking for:

1. Change some source files of the Kernel (in platform-x/build-target/linux-x.x.x/...)
2. ptxdist drop kernel.compile
3. ptxdist go
4. ptxdist images
