Hi folks,
found the answer, and it could not have been more trivial:
The configuration for USB Serial converter was wrong and must be like this:

Load as Module when using Generic Serial Device (see documentation for module in Kernel version 3.7, changed in never versions)
ptxdist kernelconfig --> device drivers --> USB support --> <M> USB Serial Converter support

Enable USB Serial Converter support:
ptxdist kernelconfig --> device drivers --> USB support --> <M> USB Serial Converter support --> [*] USB Serial Converter support

The List of serial converters includes a lot of devices, if your device is not included and uses generic serial device, the top element must be enabled.
Unfortunately somewhere between enabling the option and running ptxdist images the selection disappeared on my setting.
So when the "Serial converter" selection is not set, but other non generic devices are enabled, usbserial.ko is available but will not accept input parameters from modprobe.

Hope this helps others when stumbling upon.
Enjoy your day and greetings,
Martin Hollingsworth
