hmm, pragmatic, but not really optimal.
the optimal way would be fixing these tools to be usable for
crosscompilng. yes, I know, that could be a huge amount of work :(
by the way: I'm really in favour of _always_ regenarating the whole
build script stuff (autotools+friends) ... had more than enough
trouble w/ them in recent years.
