We've already discussed the issue with unsetting exported shell functions. At least for Debian unstable there is one more serious issue: 'pkg-config' fails in configure scripts. I've pushed a fix for that to ptxdist master, so if you run into mysterious failed checks in configure scripts, take a look at that commit.
